Tom Denny at Martley
I chanced upon a bright December sun,
Early afternoon,
Good for West wall windows.
Through country lanes I sped by car
To catch the sun on panes of coloured glass.
Rippling gold was pouring out,
Fired by flaming orange.
Blue Lapwing diving through
Calmed that fierce and fiery heat
With hint of angel song;
All creation praising God.
Warmth and care for the sheep below,
Glory for the shepherd’s upturned face.
Beyond the window,
Leaves were gone; the branches bare;
Chill wind blew; the birds were silent;
Year was giving out to frost and ice:
Yet, to all who ponder, watch and wait,
The holy glow of God shall surely come.
