Denny Blue
Chartres blue; Denny blue,
Pouring from the cusps at Stutton.
A shadow coming down, the leaflet says.
But blue; why blue?
I chose blue for my bike when young.
Later I thrilled at the blueness of sky.
Its clarity, brilliance, and ozone protection.
Hidden in veins, deep in the earth,
Found, valued as gemstones,
Scorned as pigment,
Then treasured and crafted as Virgin holiness.
Uncreated light,
Refracted and revealed, through created vessels.
Gloucester’s awash with blue.
Martley’s gold and flaming orange is
Cooled with drops of blue,
While Hanley’s burning bush
Is blue with flames of holy fire.
Rublev’s gold is glory divine.
Novgorod’s George rides out from red.
But the West gave us blue.
Boy for some, but girl for others.
But what does it do for you?
