worship_focus_am_363_485_90ArtServe's 2010 regional training day Exploring worship - celebration and renewal was held at High Street Methodist Church, Harpenden on Saturday 12th June.

Workshops were led by Michael Davies, Nick Young, Barbara Young, Rob Newton and Jacqui Hicks, and the Revd Heather Noel-Smith led a plenary session entitled Music and the Mind.

Jacqui Hicks writes:

It was a lovely day, lots of laughter, lots of help when my technical stuff refused to work (doesn't it always happen). There was a fantastic spread for lunch. Chris Lawley and myself supplied a wide range of creative books on two long tables groaning under the weight; these were resources to thumb through before going off to buy;  a printed list of the books was supplied to take away.

A fabulous keynote speech with lots of examples of different sorts of music and liberally sprinkled with humour by Heather Noel-Smith about how the mind is receptive, or not, to different sorts of music and sound .

The first of two workshops led by myself  was multisensory psalms  and involved a bit of background to the Psalms then looking at, listening to, reading, singing, writing and dancing psalms.

The second workshop, An introduction to the Methodist Church Modern Art Collection, used a PowerPoint presentation of lots of different art, postcards, and the Roger Wollen reference book. I talked about the artist and the detailed background to each painting. This presentation followed the story of the Life of Jesus and was meditative as well as informative. I followed this with a presentation on a few more of the paintings to explain various ways the art can be used in worship. At the end was a short plenary session where different people shared their experiences of how art had been used in worship.

Rob Newton started off our closing worship. During this worship I handed out cards to everyone and briefly explained another piece of artwork. This was then used it as a focus to prayer. One of the circle dances done in the Psalms workshop to 'O God you search me and you know me' was performed in the closing worship. Nick Young also lead us in prayers using the flags of various World Cup teams as a focus to thinking of those overseas.
