Hannah

Cradling the tension
Of crossed magnetic fields,
The Cathode Ray
Builds a picture on
The phosphor-coated screen.

Tensioned by the charms of the world,
Crossed by the power of the Spirit,
Life is re-shaped to God’s design.

Hannah bore a son,
Her very own, her flesh and blood,
Loved him with a passion,
Clung, protected him.

But the child was God’s.
She was caught in the cross
Love for the world: love for God.
What should she do?

She gave him back.

And the milch cows lowed,
As they left their young,
And the shrine moved away
And returned to its home.

And all creation groaned.

And Mary wept.
And the Saviour thirsted,
“Take good care of her,
For on this cross I build my church.”
