This meditative prose by Revd. David Stolton tells God's story from Creation to Pentecost through the Spirit's eyes. It is designed to be read aloud, possibly with images and would last around 7 to 8 minutes, or perhaps might just be read for private reflection.
No trace of form, no ripple breaking black obsidian surface, no light reflecting off cold glassy sea, no movement, no life. Unheard the Spirit swooped from midnight sky, plummeting from unknown height, wings tearing stagnant air from turbulent eddy to a rushing wind, whose power she rode, sweeping low over mirrored water, sucking up great swathes of icy ocean to lash the air with whips of hail and rods of rain, which, Spirit soaring high above the void, were unleashed to soak the earth and start the groans of creation’s pain.
With wild momentum the arc of flight, in vertical traverse, soared high above the earth and kissed the heavens, allowing light to flood the skies and bathe the writhing land and sea in shafts of gold and silver, whilst the Spirit soared, as the sun set.
It was the first day, and God, Word spoken, saw that it was good.
Sometime on, seemingly perched on God’s right hand, ‘though there were none to see, the Spirit’s piercing eyes took in the scene, became the vision, as the Creation Word, again with God, enmeshed sinews with bone, to flesh out the one called man and woman. Swooping down for closer view, her beating wings startled into life the sleeping forms, then soared again in majestic triumph before gently landing close to them to become their close companion, yet too, with advantage of her heavenly view, their watch, their guide, their comfort.
And God, Word spoken, saw that it was good.
The Spirit soared, and swooped and tumbled, revelling in the crisp air of creation’s morning. Her companions learned of far off lands and vistas of mountains and vast oceans, strange creatures and the unity of created life, as she came to rest each day to share the wondrous view her eyes had seen, for the Word had blessed her with power to speak into their minds with visions of God’s creation.
But soon, the man and woman tired of the frequent tales of wondrous things, of beauteous sights from Spirit’s wings.
They became obsessed with their own companionship, their own stories of vision limited by their earthly gait, their small stature, their inability to fly as the Spirit did. And God, Word spoken, knew such sadness that his tears in torrents fell as the earth became like the sea again, that pre-creation stretch of lifeless ocean over which the Spirit flew again, low and now without soaring, wing tips brushing white frothed peaks as the oceans turmoil cried out with the Creator’s pain.
In time, there were no more tears to weep. Then the Spirit saw, far off, the remaining few, and soaring high for better view, wept with joy that companionship again would be her lot, and as her flight arced o’er the sea her tears in myriad droplets traced her flight with glistening light of rainbow hues as God, Word spoken, saw that it was good.
Years passed and the Spirit saw, from flights on high and perched on earth, the Word become flesh to share her earthly stay. Such joy was hers that she from high in heaven flew, with wind rushing through her wings, dropping down to unite with Him that had become. Now companionship within creation complete, she knew His human form that expressed love, as only He was able, but also felt in time, like she, rejection as companions still refused to see the heavenly vision He and she had come to share. Perched on that lifeless, bloodstained branch the Spirit wept, then, with vision blurred by tears of love, took off and upward flew so fast to heaven that the sky rent in two, and the earth in darkness kept, as the Word spoke no more and in a tomb was laid.
In a while, her vision cleared and alighting, still unseen, on God’s right hand, she heard the Word again, with forgiveness speak. With His command, she gently flew back down to earth and quietly kissed the stone that sealed Him in, to reunite with his human form before, again on His command, swooping low to His companions and, with increasing speed, whipped air to rushing wind that swept aside their earthly views and with a fire that burned within their souls, showed them the view from winged height above, the panorama seen from heaven’s realms, as she soared again, in joy and love.
And God, Word spoken, saw that it was good.
